Continuing Education Program at Ashley County Medical Center
Our nurse education program is led by Shawna Hawkins, RN. Throughout the
week, she offers free continuing education classes provided by UAMS Center
for Distance Health. The bulletin board outside her office is regularly
updated to include a schedule of classes and upcoming educational events.
In addition, she tries to schedule classes and hold-in services that are
requested by nurses and other staff.

The CPR & First Aide Classes are offered to the public for a low fee of $20.

The UAMS Tandberg class is distance education, with lectures being streamed.

Safety Baby Showers
Expecting mothers in Ashley County are welcomed to this baby shower, which
is given in collaboration with Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The
shower is focused on informing expecting mothers on safety and injury
prevention for their coming child. Topics touched on include fire safety,
poison precautions, drowning prevention, car seat safety, safe sleep,
and much more. It is a free service, so simply call to reserve your spot.
Safe Sitter Program
Safe Sitter is a nationwide organization that teaches safety skills, child
care training, and general life skills to help build safer local communities.
It begin as a response to equip adolescent sitters with the skills and
knowledge needed to provide safe, nurturing care.
In the last 35+ years, Safe Sitter has expanded to more than 850 Registered
Safe Sitter Teaching Sites across the country. Safe Sitter has reported
that there have been 200 cases documented of Safe Sitter graduated utilizing
the skills they were taught to help save lives. ACMC is proud to be a
Safe Sitter Teaching Site!
This is a two-day course that takes place on various dates. The program
is designed for students in 6th to 8th grade—the cost of the class is $25 per student with a workbook and
book included. Students learn child care skills, first aid, rescue skills,
good safety habits, CPR, and much more.
Shawna serves as an ARSAVES co-facilitator. ARSAVES holds a health fair
once a month that focuses on active checking of blood pressure and cholesterol.
